I don’t know when my love of The Met Gala started. Maybe it was the 2016 gala with the theme of Fashion in the Age of Technology, or perhaps it was Heavenly Bodies in 2018 but either way, I live for the first Monday in May.
It’s a night of fashion, indulgence, history and so much glam. It’s the epitome of pop culture and combines all my favorite things: fashion, beauty, celebrities, journalism and history.
I personally feel like a lot of people take the MET a little too seriously and by people I mean those on social media. I think some think of it as frivolous night where we talk about things and people that don’t mean much of anything but that also feels like when people hate on women for liking things like pop culture.
In a world full of so many serious issues, where we are smacked with tragedy after tragedy, it’s fun to suspend disbelief and indulge in some frivolous pop culture and fashion.
Not everything has to be serious; not everything needs a think piece. Sometimes I just want to watch my celebrities do their little walk and answer the question ‘Who are you wearing?”
Something else that grinds my gears? The misunderstanding of the fact that just because it’s the Met Gala doesn’t mean it’s always over the top and costume like. We’re past the Camp and Heavenly Bodies themes. You have to manage your expectations for what the fashion will be and what the theme is.
You’re not getting Heavenly Bodies level of grandeur when the theme is American Fashion.
Now that I have aired my grievances, let’s get into the 2023 MET Gala.
The theme was Karl Lagerfeld and many people were upset about it. I’m not getting into that now - the man was horrible - that’s not up for debate. I just want to talk about my best dressed of the night.
Sydney Sweeney and Cardi B were my top favorites. I think they nailed the theme, especially Cardi - she had every element of Karl & Chanel — the white button down, the tie, the hair, the Camilia flowers… it was perfection.
I loved the tweed that Keke Palmer and Dua Lipa incorporated, and I’m living for Kendall’s Marc Jacobs get up. Kyle was a smidge disappointing and Kim was Kim. She’s stunning and the look was very Karl, very Chanel but it feels too reminiscent of her Playboy shoot.
I think I want to do another post in the coming days about the makeup and hair we saw at the Met because it was very telling in terms of trends…
I throughly enjoyed this year’s MET and I’d love to actually go visit the exhibit at some point - might have to put that on my summer 2023 bucket list.
What did you think of the looks this year?
